In June 2023, the overseas shipments of methacrylic acid and its salts from China experienced a slight decline of -19.5%, totaling 852 tons. This decrease marks the third consecutive month of decline after four months of growth. The drop in exports was sudden and significant. The most rapid growth was observed in September 2022 with a month-to-month increase of 31%.

The value of methacrylic acid exports also declined to $1.9M in June 2023, according to IndexBox estimates. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant curtailment. China's main destinations for methacrylic acid exports were Russia (192 tons), Brazil (147 tons), and Indonesia (49 tons), accounting for 45% of total exports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, Brazil experienced the highest increase in exports with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of +3.5%, while the shipments to other leading countries declined.

In terms of value, the largest markets for China's methacrylic acid exports were Russia ($397K), Brazil ($288K), and the Netherlands ($93K), constituting 40% of total exports.

Among the main destinations, Brazil recorded the highest growth rate in export value with a CAGR of +2.0% during the period under review, whereas other leading countries experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In June 2023, the export price of methacrylic acid from China stood at $2,278 per ton (FOB). This reflects a 12% surge compared to the previous month. However, the export price has been relatively flat over the period under review. The peak price was $2,608 per ton in January 2023, but from February 2023 to June 2023, the prices failed to regain momentum.

Export prices varied significantly by the country of destination, with India having the highest price of $5,587 per ton and Japan having one of the lowest average prices at $1,676 per ton.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable price growth in methacrylic acid exports was seen in Argentina (+5.8%), while prices for other major destinations experienced a decline.
