German Sandstone Imports Experience Price Increase, Reaching $190 per Ton in Two Consecutive Months

In May 2023, the price of sandstone reached $190 per ton (CIF, Germany), showing a 2.1% increase compared to the previous month. Overall, the import price exhibited a relatively stable trend. The highest growth rate was observed in October 2022, with a 78% increase from the previous month. Although average import prices reached their peak at $305 per ton in July 2022, they remained at a lower level from August 2022 to May 2023.

There were notable variations in the average prices among the major sandstone supplying countries. In May 2023, India had the highest price at $233 per ton, while the Netherlands had a price of $93.0 per ton.

Between May 2022 and May 2023, the Netherlands experienced the most significant price growth of 0.7%.

In May 2023, there was a significant decline in sandstone imports to Germany, with a decrease of 6.2% to 1K tons after two months of growth. Overall, imports experienced a sharp setback. The highest growth rate was recorded in August 2022, with an 85% increase compared to the previous month.

In terms of value, sandstone imports slightly contracted to $192K (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Imports continued to show a significant decline during the review period. The most notable growth rate was observed in October 2022, with a 57% increase compared to the previous month.

The major suppliers of sandstone imports to Germany in May 2023 were India (476 tons), the Netherlands (424 tons), and China (28 tons), which together accounted for 92% of total imports.

Between May 2022 and May 2023, India experienced the highest growth rate in terms of purchases among the main suppliers, with a CAGR of +1.0%, while the other leading suppliers showed mixed trend patterns.

In terms of value, India ($111K) was the largest supplier of sandstone to Germany, accounting for 58% of total imports. The second-largest supplier was the Netherlands ($39K), with a 21% share of total imports, followed by Switzerland with a 6.8% share.

Between May 2022 and May 2023, the average monthly growth rate in terms of value from India was -5.2%. The other supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of import growth: the Netherlands (-8.7% per month) and Switzerland (-7.4% per month).
