Sharp Decline in Prices for Adhesive Bandages in South Africa to $24.2 per kg
Import Price of South African Adhesive Bandages in June 2023
In June 2023, the price of adhesive bandages in South Africa stood at $24,228 per ton (CIF), experiencing a significant decrease of -29.2% compared to the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a slight decline, with the most notable increase occurring in February 2023, rising by 38% month-on-month. The import price peaked at $34,208 per ton in May 2023 and then sharply contracted in the following month.
There were substantial variations in average prices among the major supplying countries. Germany had the highest price in June 2023 at $42,567 per ton, while Spain had one of the lowest prices at $6,723 per ton.
From June 2022 to June 2023, China witnessed the most significant price growth at +2.0%, while other major suppliers experienced mixed trends.
Imports of Adhesive Bandages into South Africa
In June 2023, approximately 102 tons of adhesive bandages were imported into South Africa, representing a 4.3% increase compared to the previous month. Overall, imports experienced notable growth, particularly in December 2022 when they increased by 111% month-on-month, reaching a peak of 158 tons. However, from January 2023 to June 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In terms of value, adhesive bandage imports in June 2023 dwindled significantly to $2.5M (IndexBox estimates). Nevertheless, imports showed a marked increase, with the most prominent growth observed in December 2022 with a 74% month-on-month increase.

In June 2023, China was the largest supplier of adhesive bandages to South Africa, accounting for a 62% share of total imports with 63 tons. China's import volume was six times higher than the second-largest supplier, Egypt, with 11 tons. Germany held the third position, contributing 11 tons and an 11% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, China's monthly import volume growth rate stood at +7.0%. The other supplying countries recorded the following average monthly growth rates: Egypt (+23.5% per month) and Germany (-5.9% per month).
In terms of value, China constituted the largest supplier with a 41% share of total imports, totaling $1M. Germany ranked second with a 19% share and $459K, followed by the United States at a 17% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, China experienced an average monthly growth rate of +9.1% in terms of import value. Germany showed a decrease of -4.2% per month, while the United States witnessed a minor increase of +1.0% per month.
