In July 2023, the price of nucleic acids reached $23,959 per ton (CIF, South Africa), marking a 13% increase compared to the previous month. However, the import price still reflects a sharp decline overall. The biggest growth rate was observed in October 2022, with a monthly increase of 55%, reaching a peak of $46,092 per ton. From November 2022 to July 2023, average import prices remained relatively lower.

Significant variations in average prices were noted among the major supplying countries. India had the highest price in July 2023, at $189,000 per ton, while Thailand had one of the lowest prices at $10,712 per ton.

Between July 2022 and July 2023, the most notable price growth was seen in India (+2.2%), while other major suppliers experienced more modest increases.

Product prices varied significantly based on their type. The product with the highest price in October 2934, 2934.2, and 2934.3 was other heterocyclic compounds, reaching $678,000 per ton. On the other hand, heterocyclic compounds containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused, had one of the lowest prices at $3,790 per ton.

Between July 2022 and July 2023, the most notable price growth was seen in heterocyclic compounds containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure (+14.2%), while other products experienced a decline in prices.

In July 2023, the volume of overseas nucleic acids and their salts purchases decreased by -21.1% to 162 tons, ending a two-month rising trend. Overall, imports showed a significant decline. The highest growth rate was recorded in March 2023, with a 70% month-to-month increase.

In terms of value, nucleic acids imports dropped to $3.9 million in July 2023, according to IndexBox estimates. Over the review period, imports witnessed a sharp contraction. The most notable growth rate occurred in October 2022 with a 31% monthly increase.

In July 2023, the largest type of nucleic acids imported to South Africa was other heterocyclic compounds, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Furthermore, this type exceeded the second-largest type, heterocyclic compounds containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused, by ninefold. Heterocyclic compounds containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure ranked third, with a 0.4% share of total imports.

Between July 2022 and July 2023, the average monthly growth rate for the import volume of other heterocyclic compounds, not elsewhere classified, in heading number 2934, was +2.0%. Other supplied products experienced the following average monthly growth rates: heterocyclic compounds containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused (-6.7% per month) and heterocyclic compounds containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure (-30.9% per month).

In terms of value, other heterocyclic compounds, not elsewhere classified, in heading number 2934 ($3.6 million) accounted for the largest share of nucleic acids imports in South Africa, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position was held by heterocyclic compounds containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure ($168,000), with a 4.3% share. Heterocyclic compounds containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused, held a 1.5% share.

Nucleic Acids Imports by Country in South Africa

In July 2023, China was the largest supplier of nucleic acids to South Africa with a 74% share of total imports, amounting to 119 tons. China's import volume exceeded the second-largest supplier, the United States, by sixfold. Thailand ranked third, contributing to 9.9% of total imports with 16 tons.

Between July 2022 and July 2023, China experienced a relatively modest average monthly growth rate in terms of volume. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly import growth rates: the United States (+29.3% per month) and Thailand (-5.6% per month).

In terms of value, China accounted for 49% of total nucleic acids imports in South Africa, reaching $1.9 million. The United States held the second position with a 24% share, equating to $936,000. India ranked third with a 13% share.

Between July 2022 and July 2023, China's value of imports witnessed an average monthly growth rate of -6.5%. The other supplying countries recorded the following average monthly import growth rates: the United States (+12.6% per month) and India (-16.5% per month).
