Prices of Zinc Ores And Concentrates Soar by 101% to $1,783 per Ton in Canada

Canada Zinc Ore Import Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the average zinc ore price reached $1,783 per ton (CIF, Canada), witnessing a remarkable surge of 101% compared to the previous month. However, the import price demonstrated a relatively stable trend overall. Although it reached its peak at $2,869 per ton in September 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum from October 2022 to June 2023.

Significant variations in average prices were observed among major supplying countries. Bolivia had the highest price in June 2023 at $2,371 per ton, while the United States had one of the lowest prices at $1,101 per ton.

During the period from June 2022 to June 2023, Burkina Faso experienced the most notable price growth of 0.0%, while other major suppliers saw a decline in prices.

In June 2023, imports of zinc ores and concentrates into Canada declined sharply to 15K tons, marking a 77% decrease from May 2023. In general, imports showed a steep descent. The most rapid growth was observed in August 2022 with a month-on-month increase of 781%, resulting in imports reaching their peak at 132K tons. From September 2022 to June 2023, import growth remained at a somewhat lower level.

In terms of value, zinc ores and concentrates imports dropped significantly to $26M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, imports experienced a substantial contraction. The highest growth rate in terms of value was observed in August 2022, with imports increasing by 611% month-on-month.

The main suppliers of zinc ores and concentrates imports to Canada in terms of volume were the United States (5.8K tons), Mexico (4.5K tons), and Bolivia (4.3K tons), together accounting for 100% of total imports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, Mexico showed the highest increase in volume with a CAGR of +0.4%, while other leading suppliers experienced a decline.

In terms of value, Bolivia ($10M), Mexico ($9.4M), and the United States ($6.4M) were the largest suppliers of zinc ores and concentrates to Canada, accounting for 99% of total imports.

Mexico had the highest growth rate in terms of import value with a CAGR of -4.4%, while other leading suppliers experienced a decline during the review period.
