Canadian Mattress Prices Drop Slightly to $102 in June 2023

In June 2023, the price of mattresses in Canada stood at $102 per unit (CIF, Canada), showing a decrease of -3% compared to the previous month. The import price of mattresses has generally maintained a relatively flat trend pattern. The most significant growth occurred in February 2023 when the average import price rose by 42% month-on-month. Although the import price reached its peak at $127 per unit in March 2023, it remained at a slightly lower level from April to June 2023. There were noticeable variations in average prices among the major supplying countries. The United States had the highest price in June 2023 at $224 per unit, while China had one of the lowest prices at $25.3 per unit. During the period from June 2022 to June 2023, Mexico experienced the highest rate of price growth at +3.4%, while other major suppliers saw more modest increases. In terms of product types, mattresses made of cellular rubber or plastics had the highest price in June 2023 at $103 per unit, while mattresses other than those made of cellular rubber or plastics had a price of $98.7 per unit. In June 2023, mattress imports to Canada decreased by -4.9% to 188K units after three months of growth. The volume of imports showed a relatively flat trend overall. The most rapid growth was observed in April 2023 with a 43% increase compared to the previous month. Imports reached a record high of 230K units in July 2022 and then remained relatively stable until June 2023. In terms of value, mattress imports declined to $19M in June 2023. The most significant growth rate was recorded in April 2023 at +35% on a monthly basis. Imports reached their peak at 23M units in November 2022, but from December 2022 to June 2023, imports remained at a slightly lower level. The largest type of mattress imported to Canada in June 2023 was mattresses made of cellular rubber or plastics, accounting for a 68% share of total imports (127K units). This type of mattress exceeded the second-largest type, mattresses other than those made of cellular rubber or plastics, by twofold (61K units). China, the United States, and Mexico were the main suppliers of mattress imports to Canada, together accounting for 60% of total imports (46K units, 38K units, and 29K units, respectively). Spain experienced the highest rate of growth among the main suppliers, with a CAGR of +61.0%. The United States was the largest supplier of mattresses to Canada in terms of value, comprising 44% of total imports ($8.4M). Mexico held the second position with a 22% share ($4.1M). The average monthly rate of growth in value from the United States was -2.0% from June 2022 to June 2023, while Mexico and Vietnam experienced more modest growth rates of +0.1% and +22.5% per month, respectively.
