In June 2023, the quantity of iodine imported into Italy from abroad saw a significant increase, rising by 96% to reach 376 tons. This marked the second consecutive month of growth after a decline in the previous two months. The growth rate was particularly rapid in February 2023, with a month-to-month increase of 314%. Overall, imports of iodine showed a strong expansion during the period under review, reaching their peak in June 2023. In terms of value, the imports surged to $28M in June 2023, according to estimates from IndexBox. Import values have been consistently increasing, with the most substantial growth recorded in February 2023, where imports grew by 387% compared to the previous month. June 2023 also marked the highest import value during the period. The largest supplier of iodine to Italy in June 2023 was Belgium, accounting for 69% of total imports, followed by Chile with a fourfold difference in volume. The Netherlands held the third position with a 9.2% import share. The average monthly growth rate in terms of volume from Belgium was +8.9%, while Chile and the Netherlands experienced growth rates of +3.4% and -1.6% respectively. In terms of value, Belgium remained as the largest supplier with a 69% import share, followed by Chile with 16%. From June 2022 to June 2023, Belgium saw an average monthly growth rate of +12.2% in terms of value, while Chile and the Netherlands experienced rates of +6.3% and +1.9% respectively. The price of iodine in June 2023 stood at $74,804 per ton, staying stable compared to the previous month. Over the twelve-month period, the price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.6%, with the highest growth occurring in September 2022 at 36% month-on-month. Among the major supplying countries, the Netherlands and Chile had the highest prices, while Japan and Belgium had relatively lower prices. Japan experienced the most significant price growth of +4.8% from June 2022 to June 2023, while the other major suppliers saw more modest growth rates.
