Significant Drop in Price for Italian Ophthalmic Instruments to $3.9 per Unit

In June 2023, the import price of ophthalmic instruments in Italy decreased to $3.9 per unit (CIF, Italy), representing a -7.3% decline from the previous month. However, the overall import price still showed a strong increase. The import price experienced a significant growth rate of 99.9% in July 2022 compared to the previous month. It reached its peak at $4.2 per unit in May 2023 but decreased in the following month. There were notable variations in average prices among major supplying countries. Germany had the highest price at $6.4 per unit, whereas Belgium had one of the lowest prices at $1.2 per unit in June 2023. From June 2022 to June 2023, Germany had the most noteworthy price growth rate of 27.2% among the major suppliers, while other major suppliers saw a decline in prices. Italy imported 4.2 million units of ophthalmic instruments in June 2023, which remained relatively stable compared to May 2023 figures. However, overall imports experienced a substantial reduction. The highest growth rate in imports was observed in May 2023 with a month-to-month increase of 30%. Imports reached their peak at 14 million units in June 2022 but remained at lower levels from July 2022 to June 2023. In terms of value, ophthalmic instruments imports fell to $17 million (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Imports followed a relatively flat trend pattern, with the most significant growth recorded in May 2023 when imports increased by 43% compared to the previous month. The main suppliers of ophthalmic instruments imports to Italy were Belgium, the Netherlands, and France, accounting for 68% of total imports. France showed the most notable growth rate of +6.4% in purchases among the main suppliers from June 2022 to June 2023. In value terms, the largest ophthalmic instruments suppliers to Italy were the Netherlands, Germany, and France, accounting for 61% of total imports. The United States, Belgium, and Lithuania also contributed to imports, comprising an additional 25%. Lithuania had the highest growth rate of +8.5% in the value of imports over the review period, while other leading suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
