Japan Pork Import Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the price of pork in Japan was $4,303 per ton, staying relatively unchanged compared to the previous month. Although there was a slight increase in November 2022, the overall import price exhibited a flat trend. The peak import price of $4,687 per ton was reached in January 2023, but from February to April 2023, import prices remained at a lower level.

There were noticeable variations in average prices among the major suppliers. Mexico and Canada had the highest prices at $4,420 per ton and $4,373 per ton, respectively, while Spain and Chile had the lowest prices at $4,177 per ton and $4,192 per ton, respectively.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the Netherlands experienced the most significant price growth at 0.5%, while the other major suppliers had more modest growth rates.

Japan Pork Import Prices by Type

The prices of different pork products also varied. Fresh or chilled hams, shoulders, and cuts of pig meat had the highest prices at $5,389 per ton, followed by fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases at $4,460 per ton. On the other hand, the prices for frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases and frozen hams, shoulders, and cuts of pig meat were among the lowest.

During the period from April 2022 to April 2023, fresh pork cut experienced the most notable price growth at 0.4%, while the prices of other products had more modest growth rates.

Japan Pork Imports

In April 2023, pork imports to Japan increased to 110,000 tons after two months of decline. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend and are expected to continue growing in the near future. The value of pork imports reached $472 million in April 2023, demonstrating a similar flat trend.

Japan Pork Imports by Type

The largest type of pork imported by Japan in April 2023 was frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases, accounting for 69% of total imports. Fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases followed with 33,000 tons. Frozen hams, shoulders, and cuts of pig meat had the smallest share of 0.3%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the volume of import for frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases had relatively modest growth. The other supplied products experienced either a slight decrease or modest growth.

In terms of value, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases constituted 68% of total imports, followed by fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases at 31%. Frozen hams, shoulders, and cuts of pig meat had a 0.3% share.

Japan Pork Imports by Country

The main suppliers of pork imports to Japan in April 2023 were Spain, the United States, and Canada, accounting for 66% of total imports. The other major suppliers included Denmark, Mexico, the Netherlands, Brazil, and Chile, making up a further 31%.

During the period from April 2022 to April 2023, Brazil showed the highest rate of growth in terms of value at 2.5%, while the other leaders had more modest growth rates.

Overall, Japan's pork market experienced stability in both price levels and import volumes, with some variations among different types and suppliers.
