In June 2023, the price of paperboard in the United States dropped to $767 per ton (FOB, US), representing a decrease of -4.5% compared to the previous month. Throughout the reviewed period, the export price experienced a slight decline, with the most significant growth observed in October 2022, where there was a month-to-month increase of 1.8% leading to a peak price of $950 per ton. The average export prices during the period from November 2022 to June 2023 remained slightly lower.

There were notable variations in average prices across major foreign markets. Canada had the highest price in June 2023, standing at $998 per ton, while China had one of the lowest average export prices at $544 per ton.

Between June 2022 and June 2023, the most significant price growth rate was recorded for exports to Canada (-0.0%), while other major destinations experienced price declines.

In June 2023, the quantity of paperboard exports from the United States reached 544K tons, which was approximately the same as the previous month. However, there was a mild overall decline in exports. The most rapid growth rate was observed in March 2023, with a month-to-month increase of 29%.

In terms of value, paperboard exports slightly dropped to $417M (according to IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Over the reviewed period, exports experienced a noticeable shrinkage, with the most pronounced growth occurring in March 2023 at a rate of 20% month-to-month.

The major destinations for paperboard exports from the United States were Mexico (139K tons), Canada (124K tons), and China (53K tons), collectively accounting for a 58% share of total exports.

Between June 2022 and June 2023, China demonstrated the highest growth rate in terms of quantity, with a CAGR of +4.3%, while the other leading destinations saw more moderate growth rates.

In value terms, Canada ($124M), Mexico ($107M), and China ($29M) stood out as the largest markets for paperboard exported from the United States globally, with a combined 62% share of total exports.

Among the main destination countries, China recorded the highest growth rate in export value, with an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of +0.5% during the reviewed period, while other leading destinations exhibited mixed trend patterns.
