Impressive 10% Increase in U.S. Tissue Paper Imports Reaching $43M in July 2023

U.S. Tissue Paper Imports

July 2023 witnessed a significant surge in the import of toilet or facial tissue stock, towel, and similar paper from abroad, reaching a total of 28K tons. This marked the first increase since April 2023, ending a two-month declining trend. Overall, the import trend for tissue paper remains relatively flat, with the highest growth rate observed in January 2023, with a 54% increase from the previous month.

The value of tissue paper imports soared to $43M in July 2023, as per IndexBox estimates. However, the import trend for tissue paper continues to exhibit a relatively flat pattern. The most significant growth rate was recorded in January 2023, with a 35% increase from the previous month.

Canada (7.3K tons), Indonesia (5.4K tons), and Mexico (4.7K tons) were the primary suppliers of tissue paper imports to the United States, together accounting for 62% of the total imports. Turkey, Italy, and Vietnam followed behind, contributing an additional 24% to the total imports.

The most significant growth rate in terms of purchases among the main suppliers was attributed to Italy (+27.5%) from July 2022 to July 2023. However, the other leading suppliers experienced more modest growth rates.

In terms of value, Canada ($12M), Indonesia ($7.8M), and Mexico ($6.9M) constituted the largest tissue paper suppliers to the United States, comprising 61% of the total imports. Turkey, Italy, and Vietnam accounted for an additional 24% of the imports.

Italy experienced the highest growth rate in the value of imports, with a CAGR of +25.1% over the reviewed period, while the other leading suppliers witnessed slower growth rates.

Import Prices by Country

In July 2023, the import price of tissue paper stood at $1,549 per ton (CIF, US), marking a 6.4% decrease compared to the previous month. The import price displayed a relatively flat trend pattern over the reviewed period. The most significant month-to-month growth rate occurred in September 2022, with an 11% increase. However, from January 2023 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum after peaking at $1,795 per ton in December 2022.

The average prices of tissue paper varied notably among the major supplying countries. Canada ($1,612 per ton) and Italy ($1,611 per ton) recorded the highest prices, while Indonesia ($1,446 per ton) and Mexico ($1,456 per ton) had relatively lower prices.

Among the major suppliers, Indonesia experienced a slight decline (-0.4%) in prices from July 2022 to July 2023, whereas the other suppliers witnessed a decrease in prices.
