U.S. Imports of Textile Wadding Increase by 10% in May 2023, Valued at $16M

U.S. Textile Wadding Imports

In May 2023, the United States imported approximately 2.7K tons of wadding made from textile materials and related articles, marking a 21% increase compared to April 2023. Despite this monthly growth, overall imports have shown a slight decline. The highest growth rate was observed in August 2022, with a 32% increase in imports. This brought the import volume to its peak at 3K tons. From September 2022 until May 2023, import growth remained relatively steady.

Based on estimates by IndexBox, the value of textile wadding imports in May 2023 reached $16M. However, import values have remained relatively stable during the period under review. The most rapid growth in import values occurred in August 2022, with a 20% month-on-month increase.

Imports by Country

China, Mexico, and Turkey were the main suppliers of textile wadding imports to the United States, accounting for a combined 57% share of total imports.

Between May 2022 and May 2023, Turkey experienced the highest growth rate (CAGR of +16.1%) among the major suppliers, while other leading countries saw more modest increases.

In terms of value, the top three textile wadding suppliers to the United States were China, the Netherlands, and Mexico, together comprising a 54% share of total imports. Turkey, Switzerland, Japan, Thailand, Canada, India, Germany, and Indonesia accounted for an additional 41%.

Among the main suppliers, Turkey recorded the highest growth rate in import values, with a CAGR of +12.8% over the period under review, while other leading countries showed slower growth.

Import Prices by Country

In May 2023, the average import price of textile wadding was $6,117 per ton (CIF, US), representing a -9.3% decline compared to the previous month. Overall, import prices have exhibited a relatively stable trend. The highest growth rate in import prices was recorded in June 2022, with a 24% month-on-month increase. Import prices reached their peak in January 2023 at $7,367 per ton, but from February 2023 to May 2023, prices remained slightly lower.

Significant variations in average prices were observed among the major supplying countries. The Netherlands had the highest price in May 2023 at $19,368 per ton, while Indonesia had one of the lowest prices at $1,750 per ton.

During the period from May 2022 to May 2023, the Netherlands experienced the most notable price growth at +2.5%, while other major suppliers showed mixed trends in prices.
