The Netherlands Experiences Modest $5.6M Increase in Nitrogen Imports in June 2023

In June 2023, the Netherlands imported approximately 19M cubic meters of nitrogen, marking an 11% increase compared to the figures from May 2023. The average monthly growth rate of imports over the period from June 2022 to June 2023 was +1.4%, with some noticeable fluctuations in certain months. The most rapid growth occurred in September 2022 with a 49% increase from the previous month. Imports reached a peak of 21M cubic meters in April 2023, but remained at a lower figure from May 2023 to June 2023.

In terms of value, nitrogen imports in June 2023 rose significantly to $5.6M (IndexBox estimates). The trend pattern of imports remained relatively flat over the reviewed period. The most pronounced growth in value occurred in April 2023, with an 88% increase from the previous month. Imports reached their highest point at 9.5M cubic meters in August 2022, but remained at a lower figure from September 2022 to June 2023.

In June 2023, Belgium was the largest supplier of nitrogen to the Netherlands, with 14M cubic meters, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. This exceeded the volume of nitrogen imported by the second-largest supplier, Germany, which stood at 3M cubic meters.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of nitrogen imports from Belgium was +1.1%. Other supplying countries experienced the following average monthly growth rates: Germany (+0.2%) and Spain (+2.5%).

In terms of value, Belgium constituted 65% of total imports, with $3.6M worth of nitrogen. Germany held the second position with a 27% share of total imports, amounting to $1.5M.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of nitrogen import values from Belgium was -1.0%. Other supplying countries experienced the following average monthly growth rates: Germany (+3.6%) and Spain (+3.1%).

Import Prices by Country

In June 2023, the import price of nitrogen in the Netherlands stood at $299 per thousand cubic meters (CIF), remaining relatively stable compared to the previous month. Over the reviewed period, the import price experienced a slight downturn. The highest price was recorded in August 2022 at $712 per thousand cubic meters, reflecting a 74% month-to-month increase. However, from September 2022 to June 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

The major supplying countries showed significant differences in average prices. Germany had the highest price at $498 per thousand cubic meters, while Spain had one of the lowest prices at $108 per thousand cubic meters.

From June 2022 to June 2023, Germany witnessed the most notable growth in prices (+3.4%), while the prices for other major suppliers experienced more modest increases.
